Digitizing the School-to-Prison Pipeline

Professor Tammy Nyden (Philosophy) is planning to teach a course in Fall 2019 on the school-to-prison pipeline designed to allow students to produce digital storytelling projects that use quantitative and qualitative data. Katie Walden and I have assisted professor Nyden in the latter component, gathering data from eight different sources and creating metadata that classifies each in terms of geographic level and social phenomena that drive the school-to-prison pipeline. As we move out of the data collection phase, I will work on cleaning the data and adding geographic identifiers to each file to prepare for upload to ArcGIS and Tableau. As the project progresses, we also hope to develop tutorials on effective social justice advocacy technologies and to create resource lists for students enrolled in the course to use as they undertake their own digital advocacy projects.
