3D Printing in the Digital Studio

Project Lead: Max Schafer (Digital Library Services Specialist)

Vivero Fellow (Spring 2025, Fall 2025): Ngoc Ta

Burling Library’s Digital Studio is a growing space with semi-professional tools, technology, and support for digital projects across many disciplines. There are several opportunities that could use additional support from the Fellow in 2025-2026, according to their interests, which include:

  1. New technology acquired by the Digital Studio from ITS should have accessible quickguides for use and reference. The Fellow should spend about half an hour with each tool and follow existing quickguides for reference in writing a 1-page (front and back) guide on Before Use, Basics, Advanced, and When Finished sections. Writing each guide should take at most an hour, most likely less time.
    • These guides should also be incorporated into the Digital Studio’s website with images and PDF links.
  2. The Digital Studio is planning a friendly competition in the beginning/middle of the semester around 3D printing and modeling. The Fellow will facilitate these events in a way that matches their skillset and interests (create a spreadsheet to track participants and entries, assist with hosting events, support student printing projects, additional outreach, photographing entries, etc.).
  3. Find, print, and assemble a variety of visual aids for 3D printing use cases, such as: mechanical, molecular/chemical, decorative, or prop creation, and apply finishes or create descriptions as needed. Resulting objects will be featured as a library display, and then stored in the Digital Studio for demonstrations.
