Life Within the Veil, Yesterday and Today

Project Lead: Prof. Caleb Elfenbein (Associate Dean for Faculty Development and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion; Professor of History and Religious Studies)

Vivero Fellow (2025-2026): Zachary Bressler

Amidst mounting threats to the production of and access to data exploring systemic inequalities in the United States, “Life Within the Veil, Yesterday and Today” honors the pioneering sociologist’s analysis of conditions of Black life in the United States by bringing W. E. B. Dubois’s groundbreaking data visualizations into the present day. “Life Within the Veil” is a new project, bringing great opportunity to build together. The collaboration will begin with subject matter engagement to create a common frame of reference for contributors, and will also include platform exploration, identification of appropriate data sources, and overall project development.
