Art History Digital Timeline

Project Lead: Prof. Eiren Shea (Associate Professor of Art History)

Vivero Fellow (Fall 2025): Jesica Rodriguez Beyer

The aim of this project is to generate an interactive timeline for Introduction to Art History (ARH-103), Art History’s gateway class, which is offered every semester and uses a shared syllabus. ARH 103 was redesigned in 2022. During the redesign, the department decided to eliminate the textbook and moved from a survey model to a class designed around 13 principal objects (dedicating approximately one week of class to each object). One advantage of having a textbook in previous iterations of this class was that it gave the students a single, reliable resource where they could read about artworks and historical events we cover in class. While a textbook does not fit the new model of this class, students would benefit from access to a trusted resource to consult while preparing assignments and studying for exams. This year (AY 2025-2026), Prof. Shea and a Vivero Fellow will work together to design an interactive timeline to provide much-needed scaffolding for the class.

In some sense, this project is a digital visualization of the ARH 103 class. The timeline will include, in addition to the 13 main objects, other relevant artworks, and major historical events that will provide the students of ARH 103 a resource for basic information and images in a single location. The timeline will have links that provide more information (to maps, to relevant digital resources such as museum catalog entries and videos) where relevant. The design of the timeline will also allow the Art History faculty to easily make changes as necessary after the Vivero project is concluded.
