Project Lead: Dr. Stephanie Jones (Associate Professor of Education)
Vivero Fellow (2025-2026): Karolina Calleros
Vivero Fellow (2021-2022, 2022-2023, 2023-2024): Feven Adane Getachew
This project is connected to Professor Jones’ research on racial trauma in schools. The purpose of the Mapping Racial Trauma (MRT) in Schools project is to identify the ways in which Black students and their families are attempting to navigate schooling by documenting instances of bullying, harassment, threats, violence and harmful curriculums. Currently, there are over 800 instances that have been categorized and mapped. This map serves as an educational tool, one which documents these incidents in real time and as an opportunity to locate this research within other trends in education, including the dismantling of diversity initiatives and the removal of difficult histories from classrooms. In addition, the Education department at Grinnell College offers a course named Mapping Racial Trauma in Schools which allows students to engage with materials related to this project.
A Vivero Fellow working on the MRT project in 2025-2026 will be tasked with the following:
- create a site user guide which will include text, and possibly video, of how to navigate the site, search for specific data, and explanation of data collection.
- explore data visualization and analysis options in ArcGIS Online for additional options for the MRT website.
- assist (as needed) students with using StoryMap or ArcGIS online for their class project for Fall semester of 2025
