2021-2022 Fellows

Eva Román-Aguilera ’22

Eva Román-Aguilera is fourth-year Spanish major and Latin American Studies concentrator at Grinnell College. She is interested in the fields of US-LATAM International Relations, 20th century post-revolutionary Latin American Literature, and Feminism movements across North America in the 20th and 21st century. In her free time, she loves to sing Bolero music, babysit, and teach Latin American dances to friends and family. As a Vivero fellow, she is working on Mapping Spanish Detective Fiction: From Classroom to City with Professor Nick Phillips in the Spanish Department and staffing drop-in peer mentoring hours on Thursday evenings.

Feven Adane Getachew ’24

Major: Biological chemisty and Sociology

I’m interested in pharmaceutical chemistry and medical sociology. While I am fascinated by the science of drug synthesis, I want to understand how socio-political and economic structures affect access and availability of quality of these drugs. I want to be a Vivero fellow because it gives me the opportunity to learn and practice how to use digital tools and connect with professors to assist in interesting research projects. As a Vivero Fellow, I’m working on Mapping Racial Trauma with Professor Stephanie Jones.

Maddie Matsubara ’22

It is Maddie’s third year as a Vivero fellow and her fourth at Grinnell. In the past year she worked on developing the digital liberal arts peer mentorship program at Grinnell, while previously she contributed to a project examining working conditions in the MiLB. This term, she will be working on Hatian Art- A Digital Crossroads project with Dr. Petrouchka Moïse. In addition to this, she also holds peer mentor hours Sundays and Mondays 7 to 9 pm.

Mitsuru Watanabe ’24

Mitsuru Watanabe is a second-year intended physics and economics major, from Tokyo in Japan. As a Vivero fellow, he is excited about getting involved in the campus-wide research and helping students working on any kind of digital humanities projects. For his Vivero project, he is working on the Digital Community-Engaged Learning Toolkit. In his free time, he loves talking about space development as he grabs the aero-pressed coffee he brewed.

Senay Gokcebel ’22

Senay (pronounced She-nai) is a senior at Grinnell, majoring in biological chemistry with a concentration in statistics. She’s interested in the fields of infectious disease, epidemiology, mathematics, social justice and global health. In her free time, she likes to read, embroider, and bike. As a Vivero fellow, she is working on Rootstalk: A Prairie Journal of Culture, Science and the Arts project with Professors Jonathan Andelson and Mark Baechtel.

Tanmaie Kailash ’24

Tanmaie is a second year student at Grinnell, who has academic interests in Computer Science and Linguistics. She joined Vivero so as to learn more about Digital Humanities. During this year, she will be assisting Professor Karla Erickson in her project, titled “Messy Humans: A Sociology of Human/Machine Relations”. She will also be at the drop-in peer mentoring hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Claire Burns ’23

Claire Burns is a third year math and English major at Grinnell. She became involved with Vivero while looking for a way to merge her academic interests and get involved with research at Grinnell. She will be working on the Virtual Multicultural Reunion Crowdsourced Community Archive project, and she will be staffing drop-in peer mentor hours on Tuesday and Sunday evenings. You can also find her sometimes in the math lab.

Jashan Dhillon ’24

Major: Computer Science

Hometown: Mumbai, India

Interests: Using Game Theory to analyse decision making behaviour in different species, Algorithm Analysis, Digital Graphics, Animation and 3D design, Computer Networking Models.

Nameera Muhammad Dawood ’23

Hi, I’m Nameera (she/her/hers). I’m a third-year intended Psychology/Computer Science major from Karachi, Pakistan. I decided to attend Grinnell because of the culture on campus and I joined Vivero because I was fascinated by the Mapping Islamophobia project that Professor Caleb Elfenbein introduced me to.
