We would like our Vivero Fellow to help us create an Omeka website that will be a crucial part of our Spring 2024 course, “Historical Landscapes of Grinnell.” The course seeks to provide students with an opportunity to explore how Grinnell College and the town of Grinnell have reflected and influenced national social, economic, political, and cultural patterns. To that end, students will examine the history of the relationship between Grinnell College and the town of Grinnell. Students will choose a building, a town block, or a larger segment of the Grinnell landscape and write a history of that piece of Grinnell. Students will draw on oral histories, letters, diaries, maps, and photographs, to understand what their selected slice of Grinnell reflects about the historic relationship between the college and the town.
In addition to drawing on source material that already exists, students will engage with Grinnell residents and college alumni to build a digital archive of “town-gown” relations. They will do this through a “History Harvest.”
