This project collates research completed by students over the past five years in Grinnell College architectural history courses, creating an interactive and public facing digital map exploring the history of buildings in Grinnell. Students enrolled in the classes ARH 270 Modern Architecture and Globalization and ARH 272 Contemporary Architectures were assigned buildings in town for architectural analysis. In addition to writing papers, students created posters that incorporated information from local archives, working closely with the Drake Community Library. These posters were designed with the intention to be converted into a digital format, ideally providing an architectural guide for visitors and residents of Grinnell, Iowa. Coordinating with Civic Education & Innovation at Grinnell College, the Grinnell Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Drake Community Library, the Vivero Fellow will work closely with Professor Rivera to consider an ideal digital format and create a public facing mapping interface utilizing previous student work. Time permitting, the Fellow may also have the opportunity to make unique contributions to the project and conduct their own research on the town’s built environment.
