Several iterations of Ross Haenfler’s Deviance and Social Control class have contributed to a WordPress site, available at https://haenfler.sites.grinnell.edu/, about subcultures and subculture theory. The course focuses on subcultures such as goth, punk, burlesque, skateboarding, and many, many more. The intention of the WordPress site has been to offer an engaging, public-facing, sociologically-informed resource for people doing research on subcultures. Individual students have created pages collecting research on subcultures of their choosing. Small groups of students have then created “theory” pages addressing a question or theme applicable to many subcultures (e.g. stigma, moral panics, globalization, aging).
